News on Events and Programs:
Still under the safety restrictions of COVID 19, the 2021 mock trial season moved forward adapting quickly to the virtual competition world. From November 2020 through May 2021 the District, Regional, State and National competitions took place.
The Monroe County Bar Association’s Mock Trial Committee Chairs, Judge Jonathan Mark and Attorney Hillary Madden, began working with the Region 10 District 2 schools with the end goal of hosting both district and regional competitions in early 2021.
In place of the traditional Mock Trial Invitational Tournament usually held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, we sought volunteer schools to do a test run using the virtual platform Zoom. Thanks to Delaware Valley High School and Palmerton High School for volunteering to compete so all the schools in our district could become familiar with competing virtually rather than in person. This was not about winning; it was about helping all the schools become more confident and to hone their skills as competitors in the virtual world.
In February, the district competition began and over the next several weeks seven schools competed multiple times, as both plaintiff and defense. Volunteers participated as judges, jurors, and attorney advisors. In the end, East Stroudsburg High School was victorious!
Representing District 2, East Stroudsburg went on to compete against Abington Heights High School from Region 10 District 1. By a close margin, Abington Heights took the trophy and went on to compete in the National Competition where they placed 24th in the nation!
Congratulations to all the schools that competed this season! Thank you to the students, teacher coaches, attorney advisors and all the volunteers who made the 2021 Mock Trial Competition a success.
